I’m Joseph Agrane, a Software Engineering graduate with a particular interest in robotics, autonomous systems, and software that interacts closely with hardware. I’m drawn to projects that bridge the gap between software and the physical world, and I enjoy working on challenging problems where engineering and experimentation go hand in hand.

As part of my degree, I spent 12 months in Munich working with BMW’s Digital Key team, gaining experience across software development, machine learning and automotive hardware. I worked on production ML models and development tooling, while also working directly with vehicles to capture CAN data, test features and investigate issues. Later in my placement, I moved into a prototyping team, working with computer vision, surround-view and fisheye camera systems on vehicles fitted with bespoke hardware.
Beyond the technical experience, working at BMW gave me a valuable insight into developing software as part of a large-scale hardware product. It taught me how software development is shaped by the constraints, dependencies and longer development cycles of a wider engineering ecosystem.

I have consistently achieved top grades throughout my time at the University of Glasgow, receiving awards for my academic performance in my second, third and fifth years of study. My final year dissertation investigated deep learning methods for simultaneous localisation and mapping for robots and received the award for the Level 4 project with the best evaluation. In the summer of 2023, I also undertook an EPSRC funded research internship investigating the effectiveness of deep learning models for learning vehicle dynamics, giving me further experience in machine learning and robotics research.
In 2021, I joined the UGRacing student society, competing annually in the Formula Student competition. I initially worked as a software developer in the perception team, developing C++ and Python software using stereo cameras and LiDAR before becoming Head Software Engineer for the 2023 to 2024 season, where the team finished 3rd overall. I returned as an adviser for the 2025 to 2026 team, helping the team achieve 2nd place and developing a custom miniaturised autonomous driving platform for continuous integration and testing.

My interest in computing science began through mathematics and physics, and I quickly found that I could apply the concepts I enjoyed through game development. During my final two years of high school, I developed a particular interest in games development and spent some time working as a freelance game developer, writing Lua to implement a 90s board game called Warhammer Quest.
Over time, my interests shifted towards software development more broadly. I found the field offered a much wider range of problems to explore, while still allowing me to work in areas that combined my interests in mathematics and physics, particularly embedded programming and robotics software engineering.
